BUILDING CONSTRUCTION MATERIAL

My first semester in architecture was a rollercoaster of new experiences and knowledge. During the semester, we explored and understand the basics and principles of design, we also got hands-on experience with computer programs, learned about the history of architecture and I got to experience my first group project that uses our creativity to benefit the community.

Project 1: Material Experience in Architecture: Structural & Architectural Building Material Applications

In a group of SEVEN (7) students, the task is to conduct a comprehensive case study on a captivating building situated in Kuala Lumpur or Selangor. The group's objective involves identifying and analyzing five architectural building materials and two structural building materials based on the selected building. Within this analysis, the group must designate ONE (1) building material that exemplifies an experiential impact on end users through its application. Additionally, a detailed illustration of the installation process for the chosen material is required.

Objectives:

- To distinguish between architectural and structural materials.
- To describe types of building materials used for buildings.
- To demonstrate the installation of building materials on buildings.

Reflection

This group assignment involved conducting a comprehensive case study on a captivating building in Selangor. Our group chose Lalaport in Kuala Lumpur as our subject. Our visit to Lalaport was both enlightening and enjoyable. The structure itself is an impressive blend of modern architecture and functional design. During the visit, we carefully observed various materials used throughout the building, taking detailed notes and photos along the way to aid our analysis. The assignment went well for us in my opinion, the success of this assignment was largely due to the excellent teamwork and coordination within our group. Clear communication and time management ensured that our group stayed on track and met all deadlines. The positive outcome of this project has equipped us with practical insights and skills that will be beneficial in future architectural endeavors.

Project 2: Construction Details – Integration with ADII

This assignment is intended to assess students' comprehension of building construction by means of drawings and model making. Its primary focus is on the intricate detailing of building elements. One of the core objectives of this assignment is to cultivate an awareness and appreciation of the profound interplay between design and technical knowledge. The success of any design project hinges on a designer's capacity to tackle matters concerning appropriate construction methods, the seamless integration of structural elements, and the sensible selection of materials. Simultaneously, this assignment aims to underscore the significance of grasping the technical intricacies of construction and architectural design.

Objectives:

- Foster comprehension of structural components in construction and their practical implementation within the construction sector.
- Exhibit awareness of the process by which buildings are created in response to pragmatic factors.
- Display the ability of understanding on construction through the implementation of manual drawings and physical model.
- Provide students with an opportunity to showcase their comprehension and expertise in construction, materials, and technology.

Reflection

This assignment is integrated to AD2, which requires me to design a retreat hideout in the National Botanical Garden. It took me a very long time thinking of the construction detail of my retreat house, but it is an experience that benefits me. I learned about the components and characteristics of supporting structures such as load bearing walls, and I will carry this knowledge into the future.
