Architecture History & Theory
My first semester in architecture was a rollercoaster of new experiences and knowledge. During the semester, we explored and understand the basics and principles of design, we also got hands-on experience with computer programs, learned about the history of architecture and I got to experience my first group project that uses our creativity to benefit the community.
Project 1: Analysis Report
The history of architecture traces the changes in architecture through various traditions, regions, overarching stylistic trends, and dates. The historical richness creates a very vibrant architectural fabric. However, many historical buildings may face the risk of being demolished to make way for more contemporary buildings. Thus, by recording, documenting and analysing the buildings, we can contribute to preserve the historical evidence of the valuable historical Architecture. The findings are to be compiled in an A4 poster and booklet which will be submitted to the Taylor’s Integrated Moodle E-Learning System (MyTIMeS).
Objectives:
- Employ appropriate visual and verbal architectural vocabulary when referring to building types, series and periods
- Show the appropriate sequence of historical periods and how they are represented architecturally.
- Discover the way in which many varied factors contribute to the development of form.
Finished Booklet
Reflection
This group assignment is about doing a local historical building analysis. I was tasked on doing the architectural layout and building construction part of the booklet.
The challenges I faced while doing this project is time management and proper communication with my groupmates, since there are multiple assignments of different courses happening all at once makes it difficult to juggle one assignments with another.
Overall, this project makes me realized communication is key for every group assignments.
Project 2: Sketching Analysis
The project is to distinguish the way in which many diverse factors contribute to the development of Modern Malaysian architecture. The development of the project will involve active discussion, analysis interpretation and consultation with the tutor.
Objectives:
- To allow students to undertake a research comparative analysis process on Modern Malaysian architecture practices throughout history through literature review and document analysis and present an appropriate chronological account of the Malaysian architecture based on the understanding gained through the analysis procedure.
- To familiarize students with the activities of culmination and production of a research analysis through assemblage, chronological indices and evaluation of information; composing and organization of study; assembly of illustration and text; design layout composition.
- To introduce visual and critical thinking through learning from precedents with diagramming, and to introduce the basic principles of form, space and order in the architectural design of Modern Malaysian architecture
Finished Sketches
Reflection
The challenges this assignment imposes is the amount of facts for every historical buildings, I had to simplify everything to prevent overcrowding the booklet. I also need to determine the layout of the booklet to make it look more eye-catching.
This assignment not only broadens my knowledge on historical architecture from the prehistoric eras to the modern era, but it also makes me realize that the spirit of architecture has been ever present and will always be.
