BUILDING CONSTRUCTION MATERIAL
Assignment 1: Material Experience in Architecture, Structural & Architectural Building Material Applications
This assignment was a valuable introduction to the practical application of architectural and structural building materials. Through conducting a case study on a real building, our group was able to explore the specific materials used and understand how they contribute not only to the structural integrity but also to the aesthetic and experiential qualities of the space. Analysing five architectural materials and two structural ones sharpened my ability to observe and differentiate between their functions, properties, and installation techniques. The process of selecting one key material to illustrate its experiential impact on users pushed us to think critically about how materials shape human perception and comfort. This experience has enhanced my awareness of materiality in design and highlighted the importance of thoughtful material choices in architectural practice.

Assignment 2: Construction Details
This assignment has significantly deepened my understanding of construction detailing and the intricate relationship between design and technical execution. By producing detailed architectural drawings and a physical “cake slice” model of a two-storey terraced house, I gained firsthand experience in how structural systems and materials integrate in real-world scenarios. It challenged me to think critically about material choices—such as the use of reinforced concrete, brick infill, and timber—and how each contributes to a building’s performance and constructability. The process not only strengthened my drafting and modeling skills but also enhanced my appreciation for construction as a key driver of architectural design, beyond aesthetics alone.
