Design Communication
My first semester in architecture was a rollercoaster of new experiences and knowledge. During the semester, we explored and understand the basics and principles of design, we also got hands-on experience with computer programs, learned about the history of architecture and I got to experience my first group project that uses our creativity to benefit the community.
Project 1: Starchitect
Famous architects or ‘starchitects’ are naturally the idols of architecture students, owing to the visibility and prominence of the buildings designed by them. Architecture students all over the world are always inspired to produce architectural designs that mimic the idols’ works and styles. The captivating forms, the order and principles, the clever play of light and shadow, or simply the modesty of the design in its context, are among the reasons the starchitects’ works were adored. Hence, this assignment is a tribute to the starchitects and their magnum opuses.
Objectives:
- To develop freehand drawing skills through combination of self-expression, natural and man-made object drawing, architectural lettering, tonal values and rendering.
-To develop skills in colouring using watercolour or any colouring medium and choosing the right colour palette to capture the essence and express the genre of the film.

Reflection
This assignment not only challenges my ability to draw buildings and human portraits, but also my ability to design a poster with eye-catching compositions.
I have experimented with various ways of arranging my posters using types of compositions and took my time to colour the poster with watercolour , I also pay attention on drawing the portrait of the "Starchitect" Tadao Ando to resemble him as accurate as possible.
In conclusion, this assignment have benefited me on design and compositions of posters, and will definitely helped on the design of my presentation boards later on my architecture journey.
Project 2: Farnsworth House
In this project, students are going to produce 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional drawings using orthographic projections, axonometry and perspectives in three phases manually and continuously. The purpose is to explore manual projection methods in architectural drawing emphasizing on architectural conventions, symbols and line quality.
Objectives:
- To introduce design communication skills through architectural graphics.
- To develop skills in visualization and communication of architectural idea, space and form.

Reflection
This assignment, which is the drawing of the Farnsworth House is quite challenging to me. Due to the lack of measurements and clarity of the images provided, I had to search for examples from the internet.
The perspective and axonometry drawings took the most time to finish, I had to redo the drawings multiple times because of the unfamiliarity of the techniques used to produce the drawings.
Overall this assignment have enriched my knowledge on technical drawings and strengthen my drawing skills.
Architecture presentation boards are a tool to showcase your work. They are away to draw the viewers into the design process and methods, providing an overall summary and vision for the project. It is basically a medium that are communicating the design and showcasing artistic skills, and sense as a designer.
