Architecture & Environment

The module introduces the components of environmental conditions and issues that need to be considered in architecture design. It focuses on human intervention affecting the environment both positively and negatively and the relationship of buildings with the natural system. The area of study consists of basic building design, advocating passive design, and designing with nature to enhance energy efficiency in buildings.

Project 1: Creative Approach- Assessing Daylight & Thermal Comfort at Modern Houses

In a group of FIVE (5) students need to formulate creative ideas on how to maximize daylight and thermal comfort for their chosen modern house that can be either a double storey corner lot or a double storey semi-detached house. The fieldwork of this case study will include data collection, observation, and ideas to improve the current condition of daylight distribution and thermal comfort.

Objectives:

- To identify issues related to daylighting and thermal comfort at double storey terraced / semi-detached houses.
- To assess the current condition of daylight distribution and thermal comfort at double storey terraced / semi-detached houses.
- To formulate ideas in addressing issues on daylight and thermal comfort at double storey terraced / semi-detached houses by incorporating passive design approaches.

Reflection

Completing this assignment gave me insights on the complexity of analyzing the thermal comfortability and daylighting of a modern house.

Since this is a group project, I got to team up with my peers who are hardworking and kind. I also had the opportunity to take measurements on the daylighting and humidity of a room throughout the day to determined the problem of that room.

In conclusion, I had a lot of fun throughout this assignment.

Project 2: Case Study- Green Buildings in Malaysia

In a group of FIVE (5) students need to search for relevant information of “green” buildings accredited by national or international accrediting bodies (GBI, LEED, BREEAM, etc.) and assemble and reflect on the applied environmental strategies of one selected building. The case study research should involve a visit of the investigated building whenever possible. All collected information must be presented on an A1 poster and a 1 minute summary video for social media sharing.

Objectives:

- Raise awareness and increase public recognition of the importance of green buildings in addressing climate change and creating healthy environments.
- Facilitate learning on green building through conducting a case study to extract and share valuable insights on applied environmental strategies.
- Promote sustainable practices in architecture encouraging a shift towards more environmentally conscious building designs.

Reflection

Completing this assignment had benefited me on what defines a building "green" and the innovations made to make the building more energy efficient.

Even though we are unable to visit the building because of time constraints and other issues, we got to go and search for the buildings' information on the internet.

In conclusion, I had learned a lot throughout this assignment and I will carry on this knowledge to my future projects..
